Former PDP Presidential Aspirant, Dr. Nwachukwu Anakwenze (Onowu Abagana), joined Yori Folarin via Zoom from the USA on TVC News to discuss the devastating violence in Benue and Plateau States, where innocent lives are being lost daily. On Sunday, 52 people were brutally killed in Zike Hemplet, Plateau State, and President Tinubu issued marching orders to security forces to end the crisis.
Giving his impression on the latest phase of the tragedy that continues to befall Nigeria as a nation regarding Plateau and Benue states, Anakwenze reiterated that it is not just about Plateau and Benue but nationwide. "We have to talk about the whole thing comprehensively. My opening remark is to let people know that we are looking for Nigeria is a democracy with freedom for everybody, where all various ethnic groups have a stake in the country's future. We envision Nigeria where leadership is based on merit, hard work, fairness and accountability."
"I spoke last week, you can't have economic growth when you don't have strong security. Nobody will come to invest! Nobody is going to visit for fears of being kidnapped and shot. Our Army and Police needs to be trained properly using helicopters and drone technology. They need to enforce peace in Nigeria. The whole world is looking up to Nigeria to be the super star, to take its place as the head of the African nation."
Replying to the notion that the culprits are unknown gunmen, Anakwenze maintained he doesn't accept that because the major part of it is people sponsored who are not Nigerians, coming from Central African Republics, Cameroon, Niger and Mali! "Herdsmen that come in to take lands that don't belong to them. They kill local farmers to occupy their lands! I am speaking it again, all the villages with Chiefs and King structure must be adequately armed to protect their lives and properties. If the Town is not strong enough, then the local government should be! This is why there is hunger in Nigeria because farmers are afraid to go to the farm for fear of being killed. Our women and children are being raped, this cannot be tolerated anymore."
""
Sharing his idea on Fulani herdsmen, Anakwenze proposed their cows should be raised in the north! "This is why i said, trains should connect all the state capitals in Nigeria. Overnight, you ship them in the trains and they arrive in all the capitals. Nobody will tolerate herdsmen shipping their cows through somebody's farm and damaging their crops. We have to work out a solution for them! I went to the north during my last campaign and they have huge land three to four times larger than the South. We can help them irrigate the land, grow the grass there and raise the cows there."
Also speaking on how communities can defend themselves against the most common firearm, an AK-47 that is not allowed by law, Anakwenze posited that it is being done in several parts of the country already. "I want to start by telling you that all these Fulanis killing women and children have AK-47. The law that is being cited is in the book but they come all over the country with AK-47. You have to be a fool to sit down and do nothing when women and children are being killed and raped. The solution is to defend yourself! I am not talking about civilians but vigilantes, trained by the police and DSS. In Anambra where i am from, the state assembly passed the law and all the towns have vigilantes and work together with the police. If you are waiting for the police to come from 100 miles, you are wasting your time. You need local people who must work with the police hand in hand."
"We know we have locals who kidnap people but we are able to crack down on them. In Anambra, the villagers know who they are. The Governor has a team of Army, Police, Vigilantes that goes after them, tear their houses and hotels down. They are running to other states, that is easy but the harder one is somebody with AK-47, living in the bush and striking you when you sleep, that is more dangerous."
In his final message, Dr. Anakwenze stated God has blessed Nigeria with everything and the government must start to invest in the young people because they are the ones that will save Nigeria. "Our elders are corrupt! We need to invest and train our children in education, infrastructure and also return back to farming."
