Energy and Power Policy For Nigeria
Energy and Power Policy For Nigeria

Nigeria is endowed with large oil, gas, hydro and renewable energy resources of solar, wind and biomass. In addition, the country has the potential to generate 12,522 MW of electric power from existing plants. Yet on most days, it is only able to dispatch around 4,000 MW, which is insufficient for a country of over 195 million people. The current shortage of gas supply further exacerbates the menace.
There are several effects of poor power supply in Nigeria. However, the most felt effect is on entrepreneurship and industrialization, as most, if not all businesses, need electricity to function. There can’t be sustainable economic growth and job creation without reliable energy supply.
To tackle this electricity problem and improve energy and power supply and utilization in Nigeria, here are my policy initiatives;
- I will commission a comprehensive energy planning and mapping in the country where energy provision can be planned in tandem with the most feasible and most abundant energy resource availability in each region.
- The commission should include diversification of power sources, private-public sector partnerships in energy project developments
- Finally the commission should look into exploitation of renewable energy resources including solar, wind and biomass.
